Couples Therapy
I provide couples therapy services for a wide range of partnerships. Whether partners consider themselves in a committed relationship, non-monogamous relationship, or anything in between, I am intentional to approach each set of relationship dynamics with curiosity and respect to reach desired goals for each individual’s needs and the needs within the relational system.
Couples therapy can be beneficial for:
Communication Problems: Struggling with misunderstandings, frequent arguments, or difficulty expressing feelings can strain a relationship. Therapy can help improve communication skills and foster better understanding.
Conflict Resolution: Ongoing conflicts or recurring issues (e.g., money, parenting, or intimacy) that are difficult to resolve on your own may benefit from professional guidance to address and solve these problems constructively.
Emotional Disconnect: When partners feel emotionally distant or disconnected, therapy can provide a space to rebuild intimacy, reconnect, and restore a sense of closeness.
Trust Issues: Infidelity, dishonesty, or other breaches of trust can deeply affect a relationship. Therapy can assist in rebuilding trust, understanding the underlying issues, and moving forward.
Life Transitions: Major life changes (e.g., marriage, parenthood, career shifts, or relocation) can create stress. Therapy helps couples navigate these transitions and adapt together.
Unresolved Past Trauma: Past experiences or unresolved emotional wounds may affect current relationship dynamics. Therapy can help process these issues and heal together.
Sexual and Intimacy Issues: Problems related to sex, desire, or intimacy can be addressed with therapy, helping couples communicate openly and rebuild sexual and emotional connection.
Feeling Stuck: If a couple feels like they're in a rut or repeating patterns without progress, therapy can help them explore new ways of relating and problem-solving.
Personal Growth: Couples therapy can also be a way to foster individual growth within the relationship, improving self-awareness and emotional intelligence.
I primarily utilize Gottman Theory in therapy work with couples. But what is this?
Gottman Theory, developed by Dr. John Gottman and his colleagues, is a research-based approach to couples therapy that focuses on understanding and improving relationships through key principles. It is grounded in the idea that the quality of a couple's relationship can be predicted by certain behaviors and patterns of interaction. The theory identifies both positive and negative factors that influence relationship health.
Gottman’s research also highlights the importance of love, respect, and emotional intelligence in sustaining healthy relationships. Couples therapy based on Gottman Theory helps partners strengthen their bond, improve communication, manage conflict more effectively, and build a resilient, emotionally supportive partnership.

Why Private Pay?
While insurance-covered therapy may be the right choice for some, private-pay therapy offers a range of advantages for those looking for more personalized, flexible, and private care. By choosing to pay out of pocket, you’re investing in a therapeutic experience that prioritizes your unique needs and provides a higher level of control over your mental health treatment. Whether you value privacy, flexibility, or a more tailored approach, private-pay therapy is worth considering if you're looking for a deeper, more individualized form of care.
-
One of the biggest advantages of private-pay therapy is the flexibility it provides. With insurance or in-network services, therapists often have to follow certain protocols, billing structures, and restrictions set by insurance companies. These constraints can limit the therapist’s approach to your treatment or the frequency of sessions.
Private-pay therapy allows for a more customized experience. You and your therapist can decide on the best treatment plan without needing to conform to insurance regulations. This means fewer limitations on session length, frequency, and treatment approaches, giving you a more personalized care experience.
-
Because private-pay therapists aren't beholden to insurance company rules and reimbursement rates, they often have the ability to spend more time with you, which can lead to a more thorough exploration of your concerns. In-network therapists, under pressure to meet productivity standards for insurance reimbursements, may have to condense sessions or limit the depth of therapy.
Additionally, private-pay therapists are often able to choose their clients based on fit, rather than having to accept a broader range of patients dictated by insurance panels. This can lead to a stronger therapeutic alliance, which research shows is one of the most important factors in the success of therapy.
-
When you use insurance, there is often the risk that your mental health records will be shared with the insurer, or even be part of your permanent medical record. This can be concerning for individuals who wish to keep their mental health treatment private. Insurance companies typically require detailed diagnostic codes and clinical progress reports, and your treatment may be subject to their oversight.
In contrast, private-pay therapy ensures a greater level of confidentiality. Your treatment remains between you and your therapist, without the risk of external parties like insurance companies becoming involved in your personal health data.
-
Many insurance plans require a formal mental health diagnosis in order to approve coverage. For those seeking therapy for personal growth, relationship issues, or general life stress (and who may not necessarily have a formal diagnosable mental health disorder), this can be frustrating or even counterproductive.
Private-pay therapy, however, allows you to access care without the need to label or diagnose your struggles. This can create a more open, less pathologizing environment where you are free to explore your concerns at your own pace.
-
Insurance panels and in-network therapists can have longer wait times due to the high demand for covered services and the administrative requirements of insurance billing. This can delay the start of treatment or make it difficult to find a therapist with availability that suits your schedule.
With private-pay therapy, therapists often have more availability and can typically offer quicker access to care. This can be crucial for people who need help sooner rather than later.
-
Insurance companies typically limit your access to therapists within a specific network. If you're looking for a therapist with a particular specialization, or if you’ve found a therapist you connect with, your options may be restricted by your insurance provider’s network.
Private-pay therapy offers the freedom to work with any therapist, regardless of whether they are in-network with an insurance provider. This opens up a wider range of choices and allows you to find the right fit based on personality, specialization, and approach, not just availability or network status.
-
While private-pay therapy may seem more expensive upfront, it can often save money in the long run. Insurance companies may impose limits on the number of therapy sessions they will approve per year, or require co-pays and deductibles. Furthermore, the process of dealing with insurance claims and authorizations can create delays and additional stress.
With private-pay therapy, you have more control over the number and frequency of sessions, leading to potentially more efficient and effective treatment. Additionally, some therapists offer sliding scale fees or payment plans to make it more affordable.
